A chilly winter night. 2 A.M. My phone buzzed. “Bro, I just completed the whole season of Mirzapur! It is so amazing.”- read the notification from my good friend Rahul, who had made it his ultimate aim to binge watch as many series as he could, during this vacation. This seems familiar to most of us, if not all. Spending the mornings with Joey’s ‘How you doin'?’ to evenings with Sheldon’s ‘This is my spot’ has become the definition of being cool and spending your vacations. After all, Netflix and Chill. Pretty awesome, hah?

But it isn’t really a rational choice to spend all this free time that we have, into doing something non-productive. It is just a matter of few days when the college re-opens and the monotony of life dooms upon us, yet again. Classes starting at 8:30 A.M. Meetings at 1:30 P.M. (Attendance Compulsory).

Moreover, with the college fests just around the corner, you’ll get more and more busy in those things with hardly any time left for ‘Personal Development’.

So, what if you actually spend your time doing something productive, learning something new and interesting these vacations, alongside the entertainment part? Well, we’ll get to the ‘how’ part of that, pretty soon. But first, let’s look at ‘why’ you should spend your vacations productively.

1. Increases Self Awareness

You get to know who you are – your values, beliefs and the purpose you wish to pursue.

2. Develop a creative outlook

Learning new and out of the box things opens up your thinking nerves which helps you to look at things from a creative outlook.

3. Motivation

Whenever you do something productive and ‘create’ something, you become more and more self-confident and feel motivated, because you actually begin realising that you can actually do something substantial.

4. Edge over the others

With ultimate-level competition around you, it’s not rare to feel demotivated due to lack of belief in your own skills. However, if you spend your time doing something productive and learning something new, it helps you to become a better version of yourself.

Now, there are two ways we can proceed further.

If you are still not convinced that you need to learn something new, you should go over the above reasons once again and move further.

If you are convinced that you need to spend your free time learning something new, keep reading.

So, here are 5 software that you can learn these vacations and gain some really helpful skills:

1) Microsoft Excel

The spreadsheet software by Microsoft is extremely useful in all walks of life. With Tables, Charts, Formulae, Macros and much more, Excel can save a lot of time and efforts and help you to present data in a very structured manner. If you plan on purchasing the Office 365 Subscription, it’s just icing on the cake.

2) Wondershare Filmora

Who doesn’t like creating those slideshows from their family trips and on their friends’ birthdays? Filmora is a basic video editing software with a very easy-to-use and user-friendly interface. It has tons of video effects including motion elements, animated titles, royalty-free music, and transitions. In fact, Wondershare just recently launched FilmoraPro which allows you to take your editing capabilities to a whole another level.

3) VideoScribe

It is a white-board animation software which allows you to create some engaging explainer videos. It has drag and drop functionality which makes it a highly user-friendly alternative to create animated videos.

4) Prezi

We’ve been using and making presentations on Microsoft PowerPoint since many years but it’s time we moved ahead. Prezi is a visual storytelling software alternative to traditional slide-based presentation formats. Prezi presentations feature a map-like overview that lets users pan between topics, zoom in on details, and pull back to reveal context. Available both as a desktop application and a website, It is a must-know software for all.

5) Adobe Photoshop

Well, I saved the best for the last. Adobe Photoshop is a raster-graphic editor that not only allows you to create graphics but also, edit pictures, remove/fix any unwanted part of the picture, change backgrounds and what not. Designing logos, making banners and posters, designing t-shirts, Picture Compositing, Double Exposure Effects, are some of the many things that you can do on this amazing software.

Happy Learning! I’ll go and share this with Rahul, in the meanwhile.
